Logo Comparison-Retail

The Borders logo works well in representing the company. The text is simple, easy to ready, and easy to remember. The logo is very adaptable, would like good in any size or in any color. The logo relates to the name of company because of the simple red line that is under the word. The line represents a border, which represents the name of the compnay, Borders. The small amount of color makes this border stand out. However, the contrast isn't too great as to take attention away from the company. Overall, it is a very successful logo.

The Campus Book and Supply logo is not as successful. The text is very plain and basic. The logo doesn't relate to the company. The fact that books are sold here is not made evident. This company also serves thousands of college students, yet the logo isn't relatable to that demographic. Although it is easily readable and is very adaptable, the overly simplistic design doesn't stick out in memory and doesn't draw the attention of the companies key demographic.

Logo Comparison-Manufacturing

The first logo for Invista works very well. It is composed of several different sized circular graphics. These are representative of the polymers and the process of creation that the company goes through. The circles are also representative of the many different kinds of polymers that the company creates. There are many different types of polymers, but they all come together to form Invista. The graphic is easy to recall and has an interesting graphic. It can be easily adapted and has good readability.

The Amplify Functional Polymers logo is not as successful as the Invista logo. The crossing of the letter A is unique, but carrying the cut out shape across all the letters effects the readability of the word Amplify. The rest of the logo is easily read and displays what the company does, but the company name doesn't come across clearly. I don't think this logo would be easily adaptable. At half size it might be come very hard to read the word Amplify because of the slash through the letters. Also the treatment of the word Amplify doesn't relate to polymers or even to the literal meaning of the word amplify.

Logo Comparison-NonProfit Organization

The first logo is for the World Wildlife Federation. The logo is very memorable. The contrast between the black and white, and the positive and negative shapes make the logo easy to recall and appealing to look at. The logo relies a lot on positive and negative space. The graphic is basic black shapes placed on a white field. The text is also interesting. It mimics the graphic of the panda bear. The shape of the W and of the F can be found within the graphic. This helps to unify the text and graphic. This factor makes the logo stand out in memory. It is clearly read, understandable to many different audiences, and is a very adaptable logo because of its construction and color use.

The Ohio Wildlife Center logo is not as successful as the World Wildlife Federation. The typography, although clearly read, doesn't stand out. The logo relies on the plain typography to carry the message of the organization. The graphic of the duck, although it relates to the organization, seems to be an after thought. Positive and negative space weren't considered. It seems to have been placed after the typography was completed just to illustrate the logo since the type doesn't seem to illustrate to the theme. The typography and the graphic could stand alone and would still work, however they don't seem to have been designed to fit together to form a single unit.

Logo Comparison-Service

The first logo is the Direct TV logo. This logo is easy to read and is very clear as to what service is offered. The type is made interesting by having the words Direct and TV share the same letter T, only distinguishing the two words by the use of a different font weight. This use of type makes the logo more visually interesting, but also keeps it simple and easy to read. The shapes above the company name are created using an abstracted D to symbolize the name of the company. The abstraction of the letter D also creates a shape that is similar to that of a dish, which is used by this companies customers to receive their cable. The incorporation of the letter D, graphic of a dish, and simple typography make this logo work very well overall.

Time Warner Cable has a logo that is very well known, but in my opinion, is not as successful. The use of type is extremely simple and doesn't have any reference to the company or have a significant effect on the overall appeal of the logo. The eye graphic is representative of some sort of all-seeing eye. This represents the many viewers who watch their cable through Time Warner. It relates to the company and could probably be understood universally, but looks a little dated and doesn't allow for memory retention. Also, positive and negative space didn't seem to be of importance while the logo was being designed.

Logo Comparison-Professional

The logo for Seattle Children's Hospital works well for representing this particular hospital. The logo clearly states what Seattle Children's is. It is a hospital, but from the logo we can also see that there is research conducted there and there is some sort of foundation that the hospital operates. The logo is clear, easy to read, and gives the viewer a good idea of what exactly Seattle Children's is about. Another reason that this logo works well is because of the graphic. The whales represent a mother and a child, which speaks to the kinds of people who would use this hospital. The whale is also representative of Seattle itself. Whale watching is something that is a tourist attraction in Seattle, so the whales help to easily relate this logo back to the city of Seattle without reading the words.

The Kids in the Sun Pediatric Practice logo does not work as well as the Seattle children's logo. The type used in the logo is very plain and unappealing, even though it is easily read and understood. The graphic in this logo doesn't connect read as kids in the sun. The idea of people in the sun is pretty easily understood, but the idea doesn't relate back to pediatrics. The Seattle children's logo is warm and inviting and also comforting. This is because of the organic lines in the graphic and the color palette used. The Kids in the Sun logo is not successful in either of those instances.
